"Apparel oft proclaims the man."

William Shakespeare

People often say when they've been to an image consultant 'I've had my colours done'. The science of bodyline and colouring is, however, much more than being told you'll look good in blue. Which blue? is just the first of many questions to be answered.

Identifying the bodyline - whether that's straight or curvy (or spherical or triangular) - is basic geometry. Making the most of any potential by drawing attention to the positive features and away from the negative is all about creating an illusion. That extends to use of different fabrics, shapes and patterns.

Any colour has three qualities - depth, clarity and basic note. Different people suit different shades whether that is rich, muted, warm or cool. It's really not as easy as looking good in blue.

Having identified the colour range and tones that complement the client's skin, time and energy spent shopping is easily reduced. It's then a question of identifying the right cut and details: cropped or long jacket, wide or skinny leg, crew or round neck, straight or A-line? There is the perfect look out there for everyone and most would welcome a little guidance in finding it, buying wisely and wearing well.

"Clothes should be seen as an investment," explains Bridget. "It's possible to work out a price per wear per item. Spending a significant amount of your clothing budget on a pair of shoes or a jacket isn't extravagant or indulgent if you're likely to get over 100 days wear a year."

"As a man who has bought a lot of clothes that looked great in the shop but just did not work for me, I now have practical knowledge of what colours and shapes are going to work and what is a 'howler'. Plus I got a neat pack of coloured cloths, which fit into my suit pocket for easy reference in the shop."
